Choosing the right material is the most important decision you'll make when ordering custom stickers. The material determines how your stickers look, how they feel, how long they last, and how much they cost. At Bend Print Co, we offer 8 premium vinyl sticker materials — each engineered for specific applications and visual effects.

This guide breaks down every material we offer, with detailed information on appearance, best use cases, pricing, and the Substance vinyl series behind each option. By the end, you'll know exactly which material is right for your project.

1. White Vinyl — The Industry Standard

Substance ICON PM-2755 | Price multiplier: Base rate (1.0x)

White vinyl is the foundation of the custom sticker industry and accounts for approximately 60% of all stickers we print. The opaque white base provides maximum color vibrancy — every color in your design prints exactly as intended, with no substrate interference. CMYK inks on white vinyl produce the most accurate color reproduction of any sticker material.

Our white vinyl is a premium cast vinyl, not a cheap calendered film. The difference matters: cast vinyl is dimensionally stable (it won't shrink over time), maintains flexibility through temperature extremes, and provides superior print adhesion for long-lasting image quality.

Best for: Logo stickers, brand stickers, product labels, laptop stickers, bumper stickers, water bottle stickers, packaging stickers, and any general-purpose application where accurate color and maximum durability are the priority.

Durability: 3-5 years outdoor with UV-protective laminate. Waterproof, dishwasher safe, scratch resistant.

2. Clear Vinyl — The No-Label Look

Substance ICON PM-3755 | Price multiplier: +10%

Clear vinyl stickers use an optically transparent film that allows the surface underneath to show through unprinted areas. The result is a "no-label" look where your design appears to be printed directly onto the surface — no white border, no visible label edge, just your artwork floating on the surface.

Clear vinyl requires special consideration for color opacity. Because there's no white base, lighter colors appear semi-transparent. For full color vibrancy on clear vinyl, you need a white ink layer printed beneath your design. We offer three options: no white layer (semi-transparent, stained-glass effect), variable white (white only where needed for opacity, +5%), and full white flood (solid white under entire design for maximum vibrancy, +10%).

Best for: Window decals, product packaging where contents should be visible, minimalist brand stickers, car window stickers, and any application where you want the sticker to blend seamlessly with the surface.

3. Holographic Vinyl — The Rainbow Shimmer

Substance Spectrum Holographic | Price multiplier: +35%

Holographic stickers are printed on a prismatic film that diffracts light into a full rainbow spectrum. As the viewing angle changes, the colors shift and shimmer — creating an eye-catching, almost magical effect. The holographic pattern is built into the vinyl itself (not printed), meaning the shimmer is visible from every angle and in all lighting conditions.

Colors on holographic vinyl look different than on white vinyl. The rainbow effect shows through your printed design, which means lighter colors take on a prismatic tint. Blacks and very dark colors remain opaque. For this reason, bold designs with heavy dark outlines and large fill areas produce the best results on holographic vinyl.

Best for: Artist merch, sticker packs, festival giveaways, limited editions, Gen Z and millennial branding, collector's items, and any application where visual impact and "wow factor" are the primary goals.

4. Chrome / Mirror Vinyl — Premium Metallic

Substance Ultracurve X1 Chrome | Price multiplier: +45%

Chrome stickers deliver a high-shine metallic mirror finish — like polished stainless steel or liquid mercury. The effect is sleek, modern, and unmistakably premium. Where holographic says "fun and eye-catching," chrome says "luxury and sophisticated."

Like holographic, the metallic base shows through printed designs. Colors take on a metallic quality — which looks incredible for the right designs but requires intentional design choices. Simple logos, clean typography, and designs with intentional negative space work best. The chrome surface itself becomes part of the visual design.

Best for: Luxury brand logos, automotive and motorcycle decals, tech company stickers, awards and certification badges, premium product labels, and high-end packaging seals.

5. Glitter Vinyl — Embedded Sparkle

Substance Galactic Series | Price multiplier: +30%

Glitter stickers contain actual embedded glitter particles within the vinyl film — not a printed effect, but physical sparkle that catches light from every angle. The glitter is sealed within the material, so it won't shed or rub off like craft store glitter.

The sparkle effect is visible through printed designs, similar to holographic vinyl. Bold, high-contrast designs work best. Fine details and subtle gradients can get lost in the sparkle pattern. For maximum impact, use dark colors (especially black) that create strong contrast against the bright glitter base.

Best for: Children's products, party favors, craft supplies, holiday and seasonal stickers, fantasy and fairy-tale themed brands, festive marketing materials, and any application targeting customers who love sparkle and glamour.

6. Glow-in-the-Dark Vinyl — Luminescent

Substance hyperNEON | Price multiplier: +25%

Glow-in-the-dark stickers use a luminescent vinyl that absorbs ambient light and re-emits it as a visible green glow in darkness. The material charges in 5-10 minutes under bright light and glows visibly for 2-4 hours, with the brightest glow in the first 30 minutes. The charge-and-glow cycle is unlimited — the material never wears out.

Design considerations: in normal lighting, the vinyl appears as a pale green-white color. Printed designs are visible during the day but may be less vibrant than on white vinyl. In the dark, only the unprinted (glowing) areas are visible, creating a dramatic negative-space effect. Design for both light and dark viewing for maximum impact.

Best for: Safety and emergency stickers, children's room decor, Halloween and party stickers, night events and festivals, bike and helmet safety markers, unique collectible merch, and any application requiring visibility in low-light conditions.

7. Kraft Paper — Natural and Eco-Friendly

Natural kraft with permanent adhesive | Price multiplier: +5%

Kraft paper stickers use natural, unbleached paper stock that communicates "organic," "handmade," "artisan," and "eco-conscious" without saying a word. The warm brown color and visible fiber texture create an authentic, earthy aesthetic that synthetic materials can't replicate.

Important note: kraft paper stickers are not waterproof. They're designed for indoor use and dry environments. For products that will be exposed to moisture (refrigerated items, bathroom products, outdoor use), choose vinyl materials instead.

Best for: Organic and natural food products, handmade cosmetics, farm-to-table brands, artisan goods, candle labels, soap packaging, farmers market products, and any brand positioning around sustainability and authenticity.

8. Brushed Silver — Metallic Texture

Metallic brushed aluminum film | Price multiplier: +40%

Brushed silver stickers feature a metallic film with a directional brushed texture — similar to brushed aluminum or stainless steel. The effect is industrial, modern, and premium. Unlike chrome (which is mirror-smooth), brushed silver has a subtle linear texture that catches light differently depending on the viewing angle.

Best for: Technology and electronics brands, industrial and manufacturing labels, modern minimalist branding, professional certifications, asset tags, and any application where a "machined metal" aesthetic aligns with the brand identity.

How to Choose the Right Material

If you're unsure which material is right for your project, follow this decision framework:

  1. Will the sticker be outdoors? Choose vinyl (white, clear, or any specialty vinyl). Avoid kraft paper.
  2. Do you need accurate colors? Choose white vinyl. All specialty materials modify how colors appear.
  3. Is visual impact the priority? Choose holographic (fun) or chrome (premium).
  4. Is the brand "natural" or "eco"? Choose kraft paper (indoor) or white vinyl with earth-tone design (outdoor).
  5. Is it for kids or parties? Choose glitter or glow-in-the-dark.
  6. Need a no-label look? Choose clear vinyl.
