Let's be honest: traditional vinyl stickers aren't biodegradable. They're made from PVC or polypropylene, printed with solvent-based inks, and backed with silicone-coated release paper. None of those components break down naturally. If environmental sustainability is important to your brand — and increasingly, your customers demand it — you need to understand both the limitations and the opportunities for making your sticker printing as eco-friendly as possible.

At Bend Print Co, we can't claim that vinyl stickers are "green." But we can — and do — minimize our environmental impact through material choices, ink technology, production practices, and waste management. This guide explains what we do, what options are available to eco-conscious customers, and how to make the most sustainable sticker choices for your project.

Our Eco-Friendly Practices

Water-Based Inks

We print exclusively with HP Latex inks — a water-based ink technology that's dramatically more environmentally friendly than traditional solvent-based or UV inks. HP Latex inks contain no hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), negligible volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and no heavy metals. They're non-toxic, non-flammable, and odorless. The prints are GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning they meet the most stringent standards for indoor air quality — safe for schools, hospitals, and children's products.

Digital Printing = Zero Plate Waste

Traditional offset printing requires physical plates that are manufactured for each job and discarded after use. Our digital printing process uses no plates, no screens, and no setup waste. We print exactly what you order — no more, no less. This eliminates the significant material waste that traditional print shops generate on every job.

Waste Recycling

All paper waste (backing paper, packaging, office paper) from our facility is recycled. Vinyl trim waste is collected separately and sent to specialized recyclers who can process PVC and polypropylene materials. We don't send recyclable materials to landfill.

Local Production

Every sticker we produce is printed right here in Bend, Oregon. For our West Coast customers, this means significantly shorter shipping distances compared to stickers printed on the East Coast or overseas. Shorter shipping = lower transportation emissions. For our nationwide customers, central Oregon provides a reasonable middle ground for coast-to-coast shipping distances.

Eco-Friendly Material Options

Kraft Paper Stickers

Our most sustainable material option. Kraft paper stickers use natural, unbleached paper stock that's biodegradable and recyclable. They have a warm, earthy appearance that communicates "natural," "organic," and "handmade" — perfect for food brands, artisan products, and eco-conscious companies.

Important limitation: kraft paper stickers are not waterproof. They're suitable for indoor use, dry product packaging, and applications where moisture exposure is minimal. For outdoor or moisture-exposed applications, vinyl remains necessary.

Tips for Greener Sticker Orders

• Choose kraft paper when waterproofing isn't required
• Order what you need — don't over-order "just in case." Digital printing makes reorders fast and affordable
• Consolidate orders — one larger order has less environmental impact than multiple small orders (less packaging, fewer shipments)
• Choose standard sizes — custom sizes generate more trim waste than standard sizes that nest efficiently on print sheets
• Skip unnecessary packaging — let us know if you don't need individual cellophane sleeves or extra packaging material

We're committed to continual improvement in our environmental practices. As sustainable vinyl alternatives mature (several manufacturers are developing compostable films), we'll adopt them as soon as they meet our quality standards.
