Custom banners are one of the most cost-effective large-format advertising mediums available. A single vinyl banner can be produced for under $50, displayed for months or years, and generate thousands of visual impressions. Whether you're promoting a grand opening, displaying at a trade show, decorating an event, or creating permanent outdoor signage, banners deliver high-impact visual communication at a fraction of the cost of other advertising formats.

This guide covers everything about custom banner printing — material options, finishing methods, sizing recommendations, design best practices, and application-specific advice.

Banner Materials

13oz Vinyl — The Standard

The workhorse of the banner industry. 13oz vinyl (referring to weight per square yard) provides a good balance of durability, print quality, and cost. It's appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use, with a typical outdoor lifespan of 1-3 years depending on conditions. Colors print vibrantly on the smooth white surface, and the material is thick enough to hang without curling or flapping excessively in moderate wind.

18oz Heavy Duty Vinyl

For permanent outdoor installations and high-wind locations, 18oz vinyl provides extra thickness, weight, and tear resistance. It hangs flatter, resists flapping, and withstands more physical stress than 13oz material. The trade-off is higher cost and weight — important considerations for very large banners that need to be hung or transported.

Mesh Banner

Mesh banners have a perforated structure that allows wind to pass through the material. This is essential for outdoor installations in high-wind areas where a solid vinyl banner would act as a sail and risk tearing or bringing down its mounting hardware. Mesh banners reduce wind load by approximately 70% while still displaying your design clearly from viewing distance.

Fabric Banner

For indoor events, trade shows, and premium presentations, fabric banners offer a soft, premium feel that vinyl can't match. Fabric drapes naturally without curling, doesn't create glare under event lighting, and looks more sophisticated in professional settings. The trade-off: fabric is not weatherproof and should not be used outdoors.

Finishing Options

Hemmed edges + grommets — The most common finishing. Edges are folded and heat-welded for reinforcement, with brass grommets installed every 2-3 feet around the perimeter. Grommets accept hooks, zip ties, rope, or bungee cords for versatile hanging options.

Pole pockets — Fabric sleeves sewn along the top and/or bottom edges that accept a dowel, pipe, or banner stand pole. Used for hanging banners from ceiling-mounted poles or for retractable banner stands.

Retractable stand — The banner ships with a pull-up retractable stand. The banner retracts into the base for transport and pulls up for display. The standard retractable size is 33"x79" (approximately 3'x7'). Portable, professional, and perfect for trade shows and presentations.

Design Best Practices

Keep it simple. Banners are read from a distance — 10 feet, 50 feet, sometimes 100+ feet. Every element must be bold and clear enough to read at your expected viewing distance. A banner crammed with text and details is a banner nobody reads.

Large text is mandatory. The general rule: text should be at least 1 inch tall for every 10 feet of viewing distance. For a banner meant to be read from 50 feet away, your headline text should be at least 5 inches tall. Err on the side of larger.

High contrast. Dark text on light backgrounds (or vice versa) ensures readability in all lighting conditions. Avoid low-contrast combinations like yellow text on white, or dark blue text on black.

Include a clear CTA. What do you want the viewer to do? Call a phone number? Visit a website? Come inside? The call to action should be the second-most prominent element on the banner after your headline or brand name.
